A Home in Difficult Times

Our goal is to help families focus on their child’s healing – so we ensure families don’t have to worry about basics like a place to stay, where they will find their next meal, or where they can take a shower. Houses A and C have a total of 70 rooms in a warm, welcoming atmosphere that feels like home.

Each family has their own bedroom with 2 beds, private bath, telephone, television and DVD player, and Internet connection. Shared communal spaces include kitchen and dining room, large living rooms, a computer room with Internet access, a library, free laundry facilities, a teen room, indoor and outdoor play areas, exercise room and theater. Each family is provided with their own kitchen cabinet and refrigerator space.

We offer a pantry, filled with everything a family might need to make a simple meal or have a snack. Every week we order dairy, fruits, and other items so families have fresh food available as well. Thanks to volunteers, families also can come home to a hot, homemade meal many nights of the week. The kitchen is fully stocked with appliances as well as all the things families need to prepare and serve a meal (utensils, plates, cups, etc). The House provides towels, blankets, linens, cleaning supplies, and paper products so families always have what they need when they need it.

We also offer 10 furnished, self-contained apartments for families of bone marrow transplant patients who require isolation and aren’t able to live in communal housing.

Our House started in 1983 with just 20 rooms. In 2003, we built two new facilities, including a self-contained apartment unit for bone marrow transplant patients. The renovation quadrupled the House’s capacity, so we can serve up to 80 families per night. While the majority of our patients come from Western Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho, we serve any family whose child is receiving treatment at Seattle Children’s Hospital, including out of state and international patients.
