Hospice Maui is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and has been serving its community with quality, compassionate hospice care for the seriously ill, and support for their family members, since 1978.
Since its incorporation in 1981, Hospice Maui has grown each year in response to community need. Hospice Maui’s on-island clinical team includes a full time physician, 19 registered nurses, 4 social workers, 4 hospice aides, 2 spiritual care coordinators, 1 volunteer coordinator, and 45 highly trained and skilled volunteers. All of the 11 Hospice Maui Board of Directors are volunteers and residents of Maui.
Our work is to provide physical comfort and emotional and spiritual support for people who are terminally ill, while supporting and assisting their families, both before the death and while they are grieving. Our deeper purpose is to enrich our community by helping people make the most of the gifts that preparing for death can bring: Compassion, Insight, Courage, Humility, Inspiration, Confidence and Growth.
Our vision is to fill an unmet need in Maui County, thereby increasing access to hospice care with a facilities expansion that includes the design and construction of both a hospice care coordination center and a hospice residence, “Hospice Hale”. At present we can only provide hospice care to those who have a residence, can be made comfortable at home, and have caregiving in place. The “place” where people spend their last weeks or days can have a big impact on their and their families’ experience of this time, and while we do serve those in need in assisted living facilities, care homes, and nursing homes, there is currently no “place” on Maui that’s purpose is dedicated to this goal. We have also outgrown our current Care Coordination Center and we will need increased space for the coordination of hospice care. Thus the need for a new Care Coordination Center is part of our facilities expansion. And it will address the increased need for adequate space for the coordination of hospice care in the many settings we serve.
