5 Ways to Give Back on Giving Tuesday without Breaking the Bank
As the Giving Tuesday movement continues to grow, your inbox is likely to fill with appeals to donate. Here are 5 ways you can give back on Giving Tuesday without breaking the bank.
Donate Food to Food Banks
The holiday season often depletes food banks. After supporting all the Thanksgiving needs, your local food bank likely needs donations of nonperishable food.
Give Blankets to Homeless Shelters
As winter cold weather arrives, so too, does the need for donations of blankets, coats, hats and mittens. There is also a need for small sundry items such as shampoos, soaps, deodorants, toothbrushes and toothpaste. If you are a frequent traveler, save the small hotel soaps and shampoos to donate on your return home.
Donate Professional Clothing
Many retailers have hired seasonal workers that may be in need of wardrobe items. Why not clean out your closet and donate rarely worn items to the Goodwill or other back-to-work program.
Give Gently Used Toys
New are always nice, but gently used toys can also bring joy to another child.
Donate Hotel Points or Airline Miles
Hotel points and miles are hot items at fundraiser auctions and galas. With the event season ramping up, donating unused hotel points and miles is a great way to support your local charity.
Of course, cash donations are always in need. Along with the large organizations you often hear about, there are many smaller and grass roots charities that are in need this holiday season. If you are not sure how to give back, here are a few ideas:
- Give to the Hurricane Relief effort. Although some areas have recovered, there are many still in need particularly in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.
- Give to your local Community Foundation. Often Community Foundations are aware of specific needs in your areas and can advise on where to direct donations based on your specific interests.
- Give to the Salvation Army to support the Toys for Tots Program
- Support our Troops. Give back on Giving Tuesday by supporting our troops serving and veterans who have served our Country.
If you need help finding a local organization, GivingTrax offers a way to search by desired type of charity in your local area.
