“Giving Back Fuels Growth Despite of Economic Downturn”

Upon arriving at work one Thursday morning early in the economic downturn, Erica Ash learned this was to be her last day.  Like so many firms, their company suddenly closed its doors. Little did Erica know she would be the founder of a new firm two days later…

A chance appointment to update her Last Will & Testament just happened to be with a Start-Up Attorney.  His advice to Erica upon hearing her firm closed…why not start your own firm?

From one ordinary office workday to the next, Ash Consulting opened its financial consulting doors.   That was in 2009, and since then, Ash Consulting has assisted numerous firms with interim accounting leadership and/or project support.

From the start, Ash Consulting focused on providing high-quality service to local organizations while simultaneously giving back to the community.  As a direct result, Ash Consulting received one of the Puget Sound Business Journal’s 75 Corporate Philanthropists Awards in 2011.  This award was just the first step in building a strong relationship with the not-for-profit community.

Since then, Ash Consulting has continued to work hard to support their clients while donating generously.  In turn, they’ve received over 90% of their business from referrals.  Isn’t that the point of cause-marketing?  According to Erica Ash, President of Ash Consulting, “Giving back to the community is the best part of my job since it allows me to meet lots of great people and help organizations fulfill their missions.  In addition, I truly believe that we don’t just get referred to new clients because we provide good service but because people like to refer organizations that view philanthropy as a key principle”.

This is not simply coincidence.  A lot of folks they gave to in the beginning were clients or prospective clients including EvergreenHealth, Project Access, Children’s Home Society of WA and the Puget Sound Blood Center.  This cause marketing strategy helped them get off the ground with a running start.

As Ash Consulting grew, they expanded their charitable giving and cause marketing to give back to other charities as well such as the American Red Cross, Make-A-Wish and Compass Housing Alliance.  In addition, they began providing their employees with paid time off to volunteer and have also provided substantial discounts to charitable organizations needing their assistance.

Ash Consulting now contributes to numerous charities and non-profits.  According to Erica, giving back has opened so many more opportunities for her and her firm.  “Most organizations want to work with other businesses that are like-minded and it helps Ash Consulting make it onto the short list of consulting engagements”, says Erica.
